Our high-quality Biogold biodiesel is made from recycled cooking oil and locally grown oilseed rape (canola) crops. Biogold biodiesel does not displace food production or lessen the world’s forest cover. Land is used for the energy crop only every third or fourth year, to give it a break from cereal growing. Resting cereal-growing land for a season in this way is a long-established technique to maintain the land’s productivity. European research shows that using oilseed rape in such a way can help to increase cereal yields.
Additionally, the high-protein cake which is a by-product of the oil extraction is valued by stockfood makers as an animal feed supplement. This both helps produce food and lowers New Zealand’s demand for imported supplements such as palm kernel. Our Biogold Cycle graphic illustrates the sustainability of our business, our Biogold biodiesel and its other byproducts.
This independent report, by CRL Energy, shows that biodiesel from locally grown oilseed rape is sustainable, emitting around 50% less carbon dioxide over its life cycle than mineral diesel.
