Growing Canola

Oilseed rape (canola) is a safe, sustainable, renewable biofuel crop that we are using in increasing volumes to produce our Biogold biodiesel.  We have a facility in Rolleston, near Christchurch, where we dry, store and extract the virgin canola oil from the harvested seed.

Our canola does not compete directly with food crops and also provides a high-protein animal feed when we press seed for oil.  Growers sow canola as part of a sustainable crop management programme.  For thousands of years, farmers have known that to keep the land productive they cannot keep planting wheat or barley over and over again.  Every few years, grain land must be planted in something else.  This is called a break crop: it gives the land a break.

Canola is a good break crop.  It assists both in maintaining soil structure and the following crop’s productivity.
